How Strong is Your Network?
I recently returned from the Business Professional Women's (BPW) conference in Reno. While I was there I conducted extensive coaching sessions with professional women from all over the country and as usual I learned as much from them as they did from me! Overwhelmingly the women that I spoke with that were the most successful in their careers really understood the value of networking and took the time to make it a priority.
BPW in and of itself is a nationwide networking group and one that has dozens of local chapters in every state. Keep in mind that these ladies had traveled to Reno in July from as far as Alaska ( it wasn't as hot as I thought it was going to be - Thank God!) to network and propel this organization forward so they obviously get it. Yet the one's who are really making strides in their careers not only sit on boards for not-for-profits but they all belong to other groups as well ie. Rotary, BNI, Chambers of Commerce and their own specific industry organization. Being involved in multiple organization is where someone who is in the market for a smart career move is going to fine opportunity.
So here is the challenge... look at your own network and answer the following question? Do I sit on a Not-For- Profit board? Am I ACTIVE in an industry organization? Do I belong to one local group that gives back to the community? If not get on it and go join something - it will make your next career move that much easier!
